Survey Summary
autotrader.co.uk users proved to be fairly knowledgeable about car crime with over 50% recognising all but a few of the crimes we presented to them. The most recognised crimes were the traditional 'cut and shuts' and 'car ringing' with 81% and 78% of respondents recognising these. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that most of those surveyed had heard of modern, internet based car crimes such as the 'vehicle export scam' , 'fraudulent vehicle sellers', and 'fraudulent vehicle buyers'. 51% had also heard about forged bankers drafts being used to purchase cars. The least known crimes were 'text message scam', 'fraudulent Auto Trader email' and 'false escrow services' but from all the scam alerts we get from customers, these do seem to be the least prevalent.
The survey showed that 5% of respondents had experienced some form of car crime when buying or selling their cars. Of these 5%, 'fraudulent vehicle buyers' was the crime experienced by most (27%). autotrader.co.uk advertisers have been targeted a lot by these criminals over the last year as their contact details are so easily accessible.
The 95% of respondents who had not experienced car crime were asked if they were concerned about it. A huge 90% stated that they were concerned or very concerned about car crime.
84% of respondents felt that car crime is a growing problem, with 41% knowing friends or family that have been affected by car crime. The vast majority felt that the police aren't doing enough to tackle car crime (79%), and that the government aren't doing enough to educate the public about car crime (88%). 55% said that they'd like more advice about car crime.
